Bos atlases: mapping the world (1877-1939)

Bosatlas 140 jaar wereldkaart

This digital exhibition gives an overview of all prewar editions of the famous Bosatlas, the most important school atlas in the Netherlands for the past 150 years. The aim of this exhibition is to show the user how the world has changed, how the representation of the world has changed, and how the editors of the atlas believed that the representation of the world had to change.

For this project a special, synchronized viewer was developed, enabling to compare two subsequent maps with each other and to browse through the multiple editions of the Bosatlas as well. Notice that you should adjust the zoom level of your internet browser (Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer) to 90% and preferably use the full screen modus in case the synchronized viewer doesn't show two comparable maps in the same format.

The project could be realized thanks to a large subsidy from the K.F. Hein Fonds and the Fentener van Vlissingen Fonds SHV.
