Linking to sources in teaching material

As a lecturer, you may only include a limited number of copyright protected sources (according to the Easy Access agreement). That is why it is recommended to link to sources. On this page we will explain how to do so.

Use a stable link

A standard, digital address of a publication, the URL, can change in the future outside your influence and without you being informed about the change. This means that a link you share with your students during a teaching block may suddenly not work anymore. That is why it is important to always share a stable link.

On the webpage of a publication they are recognised by words such as: permalink, stable URL, deeplink, get link, jumpstart, DOI (Digital Object Identifier) or by one of these icons:

Iconen permanente links

There is only a DOI

A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) consists of a series of letters and numbers which is linked to a publication. For instance: 10.1001/jamapediatrics.2018.2853. This link is always right.

If you only have a DOI of an article you can turn it into a link by putting the DOI behind https://doi.org/. For instance:https://doi.org/10.1001/jamapediatrics.2018.2853

No stable link found?

If there is no stable link available, use the URL of the publication as shown in the address bar of the publication. This link may not be permanently valid. That is why we recommend installing Lean Library.

Advise your students to install Lean Library

Lean Library is a program that works within a browser and helps students to get quick and easy access off campus to library licensed material.
