Erasmus+
The Erasmus+ programme, funded by the European Commission, provides grants for international student and staff exchange, and for educational projects with partners in and outside Europe
UU has signed the Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education 2021-2027 (ECHE), which provides the quality framework for Erasmus+ funded activities carried out by Higher Education Institutions. The UU Erasmus+ programme strategy and policy are described in the Erasmus+ Policy Statement.
On this website, you can read more about Utrecht University Erasmus+ projects. For general information about Erasmus+ and its different programmes, please visit the Erasmus+ website of the European Commission, or the Dutch National Agency (erasmusplus.nl).
Erasmus+ Key Action 131 offers students and staff the opportunity to go abroad for studies, teaching, and training in Europe. This includes the well-known Erasmus semester abroad for students, but also traineeships for students, and opportunities for staff to teach classes at a partner university or to follow a training.
In the 2021-2027 Erasmus+ Programme, there are also grant for students with fewer opportunities, for green travel, and for Blended Intensive Programmes.
More information can be found at Outgoing UU Erasmus+ students.
More information can be found at the page Exchange students.
You can find more information at the page Traineeship.
UU staff can find information about Erasmus+ staff mobility procedures on intranet (login required).
Staff from Erasmus+ partner universities who wish to participate in staff mobility at Utrecht University should reach out to their UU colleagues at the department where they would like to teach or follow training. If there are no existing contacts yet with your institution, the chances of being accepted for a staff teaching or training visit are very small.
If your institution does not yet have an Erasmus+ exchange agreement, the International Office of your university or faculty can reach out to the International Office of the Faculty for a specific subject area, or to the Regional Coordinator for Europe for university wide agreements.
We currently have enough agreements to be able to send all our students who are interested abroad for a semester, so proposals for new agreements will be very carefully screened (good research university, large number of courses in English, location, etc.).
An overview of all UU student exchange partnerships can be found on the destinations page for outgoing students.
Utrecht University has been participating in Erasmus+ Key Action 107 and 171 for International Credit Mobility (ICM) for many years. In this Key Action, mobilities take place in the framework of projects between Utrecht University and partner institutions outside Europe.
In these ICM projects, Utrecht University mainly works with institutions in the Global South. In lign with our Global Engagement program, the main objective in UU KA171 participation is to enhance UU’s social impact by contributing to a sustainable world and offering non-western academics opportunities they may not have in their own academic environment. It will also enhance the diversity of UU’s knowledge outside the Eurocentric framework and contribute to the university’s international visibility. International partnerships offer the opportunity to jointly work on global challenges.
Most often these ICM projects are based on already existing cooperation, and Erasmus+ KA171 projects then serve to intensify this collaboration by funding mobilities between the institutions.
If your institution is interested in starting new Erasmus+ Ka171 projects with Utrecht University, you should therefore ask researchers or teachers at your institution who already have contacts at our university reach out to those contacts at UU faculties to see if there is interest in further cooperation.

Erasmus+ 'Cooperation Partnerships' (Key Action 2) are transnational projects designed to develop and share innovative practices and promote cooperation, peer learning, and exchanges of experiences in the fields of education, training, and youth. There are several kinds of KA2 projects:
- Partnerships for Cooperation
- Partnerships for Excellence (incl. Erasmus Mundus)
- Partnerships for Innovation
- Capacity Building in Higher Education
At Utrecht University, KA2 project applications and the execution are mainly organized at faculty level. The faculties are authorized to sign the application and grant agreement (usually the Dean has the mandate), and they receive the grant at the faculty’s bank account.
UU staff can find some practical information for KA2 applications on intranet (login required).
European Universities are transnational alliances that will lead the way towards the universities of the future, promoting European values and identity, and revolutionising the quality and competitiveness of European higher education.
Utrecht University is part of the CHARM-EU alliance in the framework of the European Universities Initiative.
CHARM-EU aims to develop long term structural and strategic cooperation between European universities. Nine European institutions are part of CHARM-EU. CHARM-EU represents a Challenge-Driven, Accessible, Research-based, and Mobile model for the co-creation of a European University aligned with the European Values and the Sustainable Development Goals.
