Focusing on the health and welfare of animals, humans and the environment

Animal, human and planetary health are inextricably linked. Changes in one area affect many others. That is why we, at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, not only conduct research on the health and welfare of animals, but also on related public health topics and the impact of our environment on animal and human health.

With our research, we are at the centre of current societal issues and challenges. We contribute to the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations, such as combating human diseases of animal origin (including COVID-19, influenza, Q fever), mitigating climate change, switching to sustainable, animal-friendly and circular agriculture, promoting sustainable food security and safety, and reducing antibiotic resistance.

The scientific research of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is an integral part of Utrecht University's multidisciplinary research theme Life Sciences. We are continuing collaborations with scientists and other partners to further deepen our research and ensure its impact, precisely because our society-oriented themes lend themselves well to this.
