Wildlife Immunology

Buffalo’s and lions in South Africa, especially in the larger National parks, are frequently infected with M. bovis, that may also infect rhinoceroses. Of captive Elephants worldwide approximately 10% are infected with M. tuberculosis, which is most likely attracted by contact with infected humans. In collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Science in Pretoria, South Africa, we develop diagnostic tools that enable early diagnosis of these infections in view of potential zoonotic transmission and spread of the infections as a consequence of frequent reallocation of wildlife.
