Entry visa/residence permit

Do I need an entry visa and/or a residence permit?

Brexit: Please visit students.uu.nl/brexit for recent updates for British students.

Important

You do not need to contact the Dutch Immigration Services (IND) yourself.
As a student you will have to submit your application and documents to Utrecht University and we will send your application to the IND after checking if everything is in order and adding our own documents.

Residence permit

A Residence Permit (Vergunning Verblijf Regulier or VVR in Dutch)  is a permit that allows you to reside legally in the Netherlands. Dutch residence permits are issued for a specific purpose, in your case: study. Residence permits are issued by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). You must apply for this permit while you are still in your home country. If your application is approved by the IND, they will issue a residence permit card. This is an official government document that proves your legal stay in The Netherlands. The card will include your photo and personal details, and indicate the purpose of your stay (study).

Entry visa and residence permit

Entry visa

An MVV (Machtiging Voorlopig Verblijf) is a special entry visa for The Netherlands. It is a sticker in your passport issued by the Dutch Embassy or Consulate in your home country. This sticker allows you to travel and enter into the Netherlands. For actually staying and studying in the Netherlands you need a residence permit as well.
