UCU in Africa 10th Anniversary Conference

Welcome to the UCU in Africa 10th Anniversary Website.

It has been 10 years since the UCU in Africa programme was first launched and we would therefore like to take this fantastic opportunity to celebrate with a get together! We welcome your participation in helping us all look ahead and further ‘development’ efforts.

This conference aims to reflect on current debates, complexities and trajectories of today’s ‘development’ and offer different perspectives, moving away from critiques of development and collectively reviving the development’s missions of emancipation.

AIM: ‘The conference challenges scholars and practitioners alike to move beyond critiques of development, reach past ideological devisions, and collectively revive the development’s missions of emancipation.’

The UCU in Africa program is approaching its 10th year of operation in 2017. Almost 300 UCU students have taken up the challenge since the program’s inception in 2007. Following their participation, alumni have ventured out into the world, following their own professional pathways and aspirations. They’ve reached every corner of the world, from contributing to improvement and change in their home countries to working in far-flung international contexts.

On April 22, 2017, we will celebrate the program and all its alumni. As part of our celebration, we are hosting a conference entitled “Where are we headed? The debates, dilemmas and trajectories of ‘development’”. The conference will comprise guest speakers who represents diverse contributions to the field of development studies and practice, while also providing a platform for alumni to share and reflect on their own experiences and journeys. We are especially excited to host and hear from our Kenyan colleague and friend, Kimaren Riamit. We warmly welcome all of you to join what promises to be an inspiring day!

Keynote speaker: The goal of the conference is to provide a platform to critically reflect on our experience with ‘development’, its dilemmas and many trajectories. The keynote speaker, Dr. Murat Arsel, will set the stage with some reflections on development studies, the dilemmas faced, and the need to revive a focus on solutions and action. Dr. Arsel is an Associate Professor with the International School of Social Studies (ISS) at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He will challenge us to consider political economy in our analysis and practice, maintaining a focus on emancipatory development.

Please keep checking this website for further updates and information regarding the event and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
