Humanities University Teaching Qualification

In the Humanities University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) programme, starting lecturers within the Faculty of Humanities are coached by experienced lecturers in their professional development in teaching. The starting point for the course is the Utrecht teaching model in which personal, activating and small-scale teaching are paramount. During one academic year, 14 meetings are organised around three didactic qualities that are required to obtain the UTQ, namely: teaching, testing and designing education. The preparation and meetings of the course all contribute to the knowledge and skills that will be tested in a final portfolio.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is open to all staff within the Faculty of Humanities (and from UCU and UCR working within the Humanities) who can meet the set cumulative standard of a total of 0.6 fte of teaching duties during their appointment (or at the time of a possible extension).

What is expected of participants?

To qualify for a UTQ, the lecturer is expected to fully follow the course and be prepared to attend the workshops and peer review meetings. Should you be unable to attend a meeting, please let the lecturer hosting the meeting know well in advance. You may miss one meeting with good reason (teaching obligation, ill, etc.) but all other meetings are compulsory. We will use an attendance sheet that you will have yourself signed off in the workshop.

How to register?

Registrations for the programme go through the department head. A request to participate goes through the supervisor who, upon agreement, will ensure that the candidate is registered.

Design of the UTQ programme

The Humanities UTQ training programme starts twice a year – in September and February. In this period, you participate in two types of meetings:

  1. Workshops: the workshops cover teaching delivery, assessment, and design that you can immediately apply in your own teaching during the training programme.
  2. Intervision meetings: in a specific group of participants, you discuss the lecturing experiences you have had during the training programme with each other.

In addition, we organise a plenary meeting at the start and end of the training programme. During the start meeting, the programme is explained, and you make acquaintance with the other participants. In a final meeting, we review the training programme and share experiences.

Purpose of the meetings

The purpose of all the meetings held during the training programme is to contribute to the development of one or more of the 5 UTQ competences that a lecturer must demonstrate to be eligible for the UTQ. This means that a lecturer does not necessarily need to have experience with all of the separate elements, but they must demonstrably be able to gain this experience, for example, during the training programme. Here, the University Teaching Qualification functions as a starting qualification, with the point of departure being that you can entrust all aspects of a course to a lecturer with a UTQ.

Five competences have been defined that a lecturer with a UTQ must possess:

  1. Professional development
  2. Teaching delivery
  3. Feedback and assessment
  4. Designing education
  5. Contribution to knowledge, teaching and impact

Professional development is the core theme of the first intervision (and introduction) meeting. The six workshops include the three competences that can be utilised immediately. Namely, the delivery (2), assessment (3) and design (4). The workshops last four hours and are given by experts. Preparation for the workshops may take place in both English and Dutch.

In the intervision meetings that follow, you discuss what new experiences you have had as lecturers, partially as a result of the workshops, with a fixed community of participants. The intervision meetings will be supervised by one of the senior lecturers involved in the training programme (see senior lecturers).
