Interdisciplinary honours education at the UU Honours College

In the interdisciplinary, cross-faculty honours education of Utrecht University, students of various disciplines collaborate on a wide range of societal and scientific subjects. The students unite insights, methods and theories from two or more disciplines. This creates a new insight in the studied subject. Many issues can only be thoroughly understood this way.

Interdisciplinary honours programmes

The UU Honours College offers various interdisciplinary honours programmes for Bachelor's and Master's students. These education programmes are accessible to all students of Utrecht University.

Interdisciplinary honours bachelor's programmes

Da Vinci Project

Within the Da Vinci Project, students originating from different scientific backgrounds work together on a specific sustainable development-related challenge provided by an external partner.

The programme is for 3rd year students.

Descartes College

Descartes unites students of all degree programmes of the university with the best scientists. Together, they research and discuss issues that matter to all scientists and all sciences. Students already enrolled in a faculty honours programme can also follow parts of the Descartes programme into their honours programmes. The official language is Dutch.

STREAM

In the programme STREAM, a student can visit one of the LERU partners in order to do research for a certain period of time, varying from a month to an entire semester. A student can do this in the context of a faculty honours programme or as a stand-alone programme.

Utrecht University currently collaborates with the University of Cambridge, Lund University, Université de Genève, Université Paris Sud, Università degli studi di Milano and Leiden University. The official language of this programme is English.

Summer school NWIB

During the Summer school NWIB in Athens, Florence, Rome or St. Petersburg students will work on topics concerning cultural and urban inheritance. The course is set up in collaboration with the Dutch Scientific Institutes Abroad (NWIB). The programme is for Dutch Bachelor’s students from different Dutch universities.

Netherlands-Asia Honours Summer School

The Netherlands-Asia Honours Summer School (NAHSS) offers Dutch students the opportunity to experience the Chinese culture and the Chinese business network by studying at the best universities in China, in Beijing, Chengdu, Hongkong of Shenzhen during a summer school. The students will experience the dynamics of China and the opportunities the country has to offer in order to build bridges between China and the Netherlands.

Interdisciplinary honours Master's programmes

Graduate Honours Interdisciplinary Seminars (GHIS)

GHIS consists of various seminars that are set up around the strategic themes and focus areas in which Utrecht University carries out interdisciplinary research. The subjects are diverse: from worldwide health issues and the transition to sustainability, to trends within the youngster culture and science philosophy. The official language is English.

Young Innovators

Students enrolled in the Young Innovators programme work in an interdisciplinary student team on societal challenges, such as food waste or sustainable housing of refugees. Students develop entrepreneurship, innovation skills and awareness of issues involving responsibility and ethics. The official language is English.

Leadership Programme

In the Honours Leadership Programme students learn all about leadership models and what makes effective leaders. They will acquire leadership public speaking communication skills and work on leadership dilemma scenarios. The workshops and lectures are given by some of the most senior leaders in the country from all sectors of society.

Job market

Employers, both within and outside science, request for employees who can combine a specialist basis with a wide view of the entire scientific field more often. A broadly-educated academic has an important added value to this job market.
