Martijn Zwart Fund
The Martijn Zwart Fund was established for the promotion of neerlandism in the United States and Canada. The fund provides a financial contribution to promising students and researchers of US or Canadian nationality to pursue education at Utrecht University.
Who is eligible?
Students of American or Canadian nationality who wish to take courses at the Department of Dutch Language and Culture at Utrecht University, i.e. who wish to apply for the Bachelor's degree Nederlandse taal en cultuur (Dutch language and culture), the Master's degree Neerlandistiek (Dutch language and culture), the research Master's degree Nederlandse literatuur en cultuur (Dutch literature and culture) or the Dutch-language track of the Master's degree in Literature Today.
Amount
Applications can be made for an amount between €2500 and €5000. If there are many applications, the available budget may be divided and the full amount applied for may not be awarded.
Procedure
If you would like to be considered for a scholarship from this fund, please send a 1-2 A4 cover letter, including a budget, to Emmeline Besamusca (e.n.besamusca@uu.nl). In the letter, state who you are, what you are going to do and why you need money for it; in the budget, state what costs you expect to incur for the study, for which of those costs you would like to use the scholarship, and how you expect to cover other costs.
An assessment advisory committee, consisting of representatives of the various study programmes, assesses the applications on the basis of (1) the applicant's suitability to study Dutch in Utrecht as shown in the motivation letter and (2) the financial need as shown in motivation and budget.
Deadline
Applications must be submitted by 15 May at the latest. Students will hear whether they are eligible by 15 June at the latest. Payment of the scholarship is subject to admission to the intended study.
