Health and wellbeing
Utrecht University values the mental and physical health of students. The university therefore schedules extra time to pay attention to the wellbeing of both students and lecturers.
Mental wellbeing
The first months of studying can be overwhelming, especially for international students. New experiences in a foreign country far from home can be exciting, but also mentally challenging. You can find tips to help manage your mental wellbeing in an unfamiliar place on the ‘Mental wellbeing abroad’ page.
Utrecht University trains lecturers and tutors to focus on student welfare. Student counselling is an important starting point for improving students’ mental wellbeing. The university aims to create an open culture where students feel comfortable discussing their mental health with lecturers and tutors who are open to helping them improve their wellbeing.
Physical wellbeing
Student life does not always encourage you to keep moving. You will spend most of your time studying at your desk or in the university library, working behind a laptop or reading from books. However, staying physically active is important for your physical and mental wellbeing.
By joining the Olympos sports centre, you can join one of the 31 student sports clubs, work out in the fitness room and join group classes or sports courses. Olympos is located on the Utrecht Science Park close to the university campus. You can find out more on the Olympos website.
Companionship
Sharing your hobbies, interests and experiences with peers can be a good way to improve your wellbeing. Student organisations are there to help you connect with peers based on your shared interest in sports or cultural activities. Utrecht has more than 150 student organisations, so you are sure to find a student organisation that suits you.
Wellbeing week
The university organises the Wellbeing Week twice annually, during which students and employees can have open conversations about vitality and wellbeing. The activities during the Wellbeing Week touch on mental, physical, spiritual, but also financial, sustainable, occupational and social wellbeing.
