The Special Interest Group on Justice, Power and Transformative Action in Sustainability (JUPITA) is a community hosted by the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development connecting researchers with a shared interest in just sustainability transitions.

Ongoing discussions on (un)sustainability often focus on ecological, technological and economic dimensions and top-down government policies. While those dimensions are crucial for understanding and tackling (un)sustainability, so is the role of social and political change. JUPITA understands just sustainability transitions as processes of transformative change that aim to create more sustainable societies by (a) improving the quality of life of present and future human and non-human species within ecological limits and (b) eliminating injustices that are triggered or exacerbated by unsustainability and its underlying causes.

JUPITA as a community of practice

This SIG is organized as a community of practice bringing together researchers working on a range of related themes for the weekly ‘Lunch In’ discussion series and other moments of connection. While Copernicus is JUPITA’s institutional home, there is an explicit intention to connect to other departments and faculties at Utrecht University and beyond.

We organize ourselves online in an MS Teams environment. If you would like to join, feel welcome to e-mail jupita@uu.nl. You can also sign up for JUPITA’s mailing list for updates.
