If you would like to study at Utrecht University as a visiting student, you always have to contact the faculty.
If you would like to attend Utrecht University as an exchange student, you can do so through a faculty agreement or a university wide exchange agreement. Utrecht University has approximately 100 universitywide partners. Below you find information about the application through one of these agreements. If you would like to apply for one of the faculty agreements, please contact your home university coordinator, or the coordinator from the Utrecht University faculty.
We recommend that you have completed at least 1½ years of full-time study at your home university. Before you apply, contact your home university coordinator to find out how you can be nominated for the exchange.
At Utrecht University we expect our exchange students to be proficient in English. Ask your home university coordinator whether you are required to take an English language test, or need to complete a language proficiency form. The following test scores indicate the level of English that is required:
- IELTS: Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.0 overall band, 5.5 for writing. IELTS is the test preferred by Utrecht University.
- TOEFL: Internet based. Minimum score: 83. Institutional scores are not accepted. The TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062.
- Cambridge Certificates: Advanced English or Proficiency in English, minimum score C.
- CERF: minimum level B2.
- IELTS, Academic Module. Minimum score: 6.5 overall band, at least 6 for writing.
- TOEFL, Internet based. Minimum score: 93, institutional scores are not accepted (the TOEFL institution code for Utrecht University is 9062).
- Cambridge Certificates
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, at least a B grade.
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, at least a C grade.
- CERF: minimum level C1.
Chinese students have to take the IELTS or TOEFL test.

University College Utrecht (UCU) and University College Roosevelt (UCR) are the international honours colleges of Utrecht University. They have their own selection process and for the semester starting in September an earlier deadline (see below).
Please note that the deadline depends on your nationality, and that your home university may set earlier deadlines.

Students with the following nationality do not need an Entry Visa (MVV):
EU/EEA countries, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Monaco, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Vatican City State.
After checking your application we forward it to the respective faculty or department for official acceptance. Conditions are availability and approval of a suitable pre-registered programme. It usually takes about a month until we know if you can be accepted.
Along with the notification of acceptance you will receive information about the services that the university offers. This includes the visa procedure, housing assistance and the ESN mentor programme.
Before the start of the semester, you will receive information and an invitation for orientation sessions by e-mail. Pre-departure information is available on our website.
