Stem Cell and Organoid Biology
Normal developmental processes often reappear during disease progression and in response to injury. We have built a solid foundation that closely interweaves basic science with translational and clinical research in Utrecht.
Stem cells play an important role in maintaining our health. They have the ability to restore function after a tissue has been damaged. We focus on using stem cells for transplantation therapies, organoids for screening and therapeutic use, and approaches that stimulate our own stem cells to repair our bodies.
Research groups
Soft Tissue Engineering & Medicine (STEAM)
This groups aims to understand hepatic, intestinal, and pancreatic stem cell differentiation in order to (bio)engineer functional organ systems. These functional tissues are crucial for predictive multi-organ toxicology screens, transplantation purposes, and disease modelling.
