In September, SURF organised a meeting where refugees with a residence permit could learn more on the employment options in the education sector. ITS Director Carolien Besselink gave a presentation on working in the IT department of an educational institution.

People with potential

She talked about the IT challenges a large university faces and the work carried out there. Answering questions asked, she described in detail the various positions and types of IT staff the university is seeking to recruit and explained that they were not only looking for people with ample working experience, but also for people with potential who could further their skills ‘on the job’.

The meeting was organised in collaboration with the UAF foundation for highly qualified refugees, the City of Utrecht and HU Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. Last year, the HU introduced a Bachelor’s degree programme in IT for refugees. So unsurprisingly, many of the refugees who attended had IT backgrounds.
