At the university there are as many different stories about diversity and inclusion, or discrimination and exclusion, as there are students and employees. In these films students and employees share their own personal experiences on this topic.
“Tailored solutions are paramount.” Maranke Wieringa is a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities and they are co-founder of ‘Accessible Academia’. This is an interuniversity network for students and staff with a disability at universities.
"Embrace diversity" Ozan Ozavci is Assistant Professor in History. He encourages to perceive diversity as a positive value.
"Make diversity and inclusion measurable" PhD student Onur Sahin does research on diversity and inclusion at the workplace.
"It is important to realise that inclusion is never complete." Laura Coello migrated to the Netherlands when she was 18 years old. She is Advisor Diversity & Inclusion at Utrecht University.
"To me, diversity and inclusion means that everybody is on an equal footing." Lisa Luchtenberg is visually impaired. She works as a project assistant at Utrecht University and is a member of the Network USP Inclusief.
"It is important to have role models." PhD Student Jana Cox is a member of Young Women of Geoscience, which is a faculty wide group for postdocs and PhD’s to help create a better, more diverse and inclusive environment in the faculty.
“Inclusivity means that everyone has a seat at the table.” Douglas Dorothal studied Veterinary Sciences as one of the few foreign students in the faculty. As member of the University Council, he became directly engaged with diversity and inclusion topics.
“I believe that the quality of education benefits from a more diverse curriculum.” Fedoua Ouchan studies Law and is member of the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion steering committee. She is committed to a more diverse and inclusive university.
“Open up. See what the other is capable of.” Student Denise Langreder is member of Studying without Limitations, a peer-to-peer group for students with a disability. The group consists mainly of peer supporters.
