Dorothea Gädeke is Associate Professor in Social and Political Philosophy. Her research focuses on the intersection between power and domination, structural injustices, and democracy. Her first monograph analyses how democracy promotion in other countries has reverted into a politics of domination. Currently, she works on the role of resistance in theorizing freedom. Her interest in African Philosophy reflects her commitment to addressing relations of domination in philosophy and Academia itself. Dorothea is Programme Director of the interdisciplinary BA programme PPE (Politics, Philosophy, Economics – plus History).

Can we fully understand what freedom means without the experience of resisting unfreedom, that is, of resisting existing forms of slavery or domination?

Dorothea Gädeke has been a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a bridge between young and talented researchers, since 2022.
