Coco Kanters is an Assistant Professor at the interdisciplinary School of Liberal Arts. Her research profile is that of the ‘disciplined interdisciplinarian’, bringing her expertise in Cultural Anthropology to interdisciplinary collaborations.

She is interested in the relationships between economics, politics, and expertise. Both her research at University College London and her PhD at Leiden University (2021) focused on alternatives to the contemporary monetary system and the professionalisation of local currencies in Europe. Coco is currently fascinated by the role of external expertise in policy-making, particularly how bought-in knowledge from consultancies interacts with the expertise of civil servants, organisational cultures, and bureaucratic procedures within the Dutch government.

Coco coordinates the undergraduate Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Honours programme of the School of Liberal Arts. In 2023, she received the Honours Teacher of the Year Award.

What mechanisms and actors contribute to the entanglement of economic and political processes?

Coco Kanters has been a member of the Utrecht Young Academy, a bridge between young and talented researchers, since 2024.
