dr. Pritam Pai after his defence

PhD candidate Pritam Pai of Nanophotonics successfully defended his thesis "Accurate Statistics from Optical Transmission Matrix Measurements" on April 30th 2020 before an online examining committee, 2 beadles, his paranymphs, family, friends and colleagues.

Many common everyday objects such as paper, paint, milk and skin are examples of strong scattering where an image transmitted through such an object is totally unrecognizable. In this multiple scattering regime, it is a great challenge to retrieve the original image from the (completely) scrambled transmitted light. This scattering process typically results in a random speckle pattern.

The transmission matrix describes how light is transmitted through a medium. In this thesis, we develop a novel method for measuring the transmission matrix of a sample that allows the retrieval of accurate and faithful statistics of light transport in the sample. Finally, from the transmission matrix we can find scattering invariant modes, which are fields that are transmitted through a disordered material as if it were transparent.
