March is the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion month

Lisa Luchtenberg is visually impaired. She works as a project assistant at Utrecht University and she is a member of the Netwerk USP Inclusief (in Dutch). In this video she shares what diversity and inclusion means to her: "That everybody is on an equal footing, with everybody allowed to join in, everybody getting the same opportunities and being respected for who they are."

In 2017, Hanneke Schroten (23) started the double Bachelor's programme in physics and mathematics at Utrecht University. Since November 2020, she is the new coordinator of Studying without Limitations, a peer to peer platform for students with a disability at Utrecht University. Hanneke: "If you give people time and space to settle in and see what they need, you can also get a lot back."

On Monday 8 March 2021 we will celebrate International Women's Day together with students, staff and alumni of Utrecht University. This year's theme is Unboxing Gender, with which we will start the conversation about pigeonholing, stereotyping and gender bias. With a varied programme, we offer a platform for research that is outside the box, and we organise meetings where you are invited to stand in someone else's shoes.

After two successful years, in which good progress has been made with various vanguard programmes, the Diversity: Intake and Selection project has been extended. The DIS project is holding this digital symposium to celebrate the success of the first phase of this project and to initiate the second phase. All lecturers, students, communications officers and others who are interested in the intake of students in education and are concerned with topics such as diversity and inclusion are most welcome to attend.

Disabilities come in varias forms. Maybe you have seen a someone in a wheelchair take the elevator or somebody with a an assistance dog walking down the hall. Or for example: maybe your colleague has autism or suffers from depression, without you knowing it. Can a person with a a labour disability work just as well as somebody without disability? Do they have the right qualifications? Do we have to treat them differently? In this dutch workshop no question is off limits.

The Diversity & Inclusion Award 2021 will be presented by Diversity Dean, Janneke Plantenga, on Wednesday 31 March 2021, 15:30 - 16:00. This year, the Award Ceremony takes place online, and is open to everyone via Teams. The ceremony will be recorded. Attendees can turn off their camera if they do not want to be visible in the video.
