Data facilities and support

Utrecht University (UU) offers robust research facilities, well-integrated research data management and technical support that form the cornerstone of its excellent educational and research endeavors. Embracing the FAIR principles and Open Science ideology, these elements extent across hardware, software, and data infrastructure.

Facilities & Support at Utrecht University

FAIR Research IT

The FAIR Research IT programme at Utrecht University aims to provide comprehensive support for research teams in the field of Research IT. It focuses on repeatability, ensuring that knowledge and solutions can be easily shared and reused by others. The programme emphasizes adherence to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and open science principles. The FAIR Research IT Innovation Fund is one of the instruments used to achieve this.

High Performance Computing (HPC)

The Research Engineering team offers consultation to students and researchers at Utrecht University on High Performance Computing (HPC) and cloud solutions. UU researchers have access to various platforms, including supercomputers, cloud providers and Virtual Research Environment (VRE) services, which vary in terms of user-friendliness, computing power, software availability and security. The Research Engineering team provides valuable guidance in defining requirements and advice on access and funding routes for the most suitable computing solutions based on user experience, whether these platforms are available within Utrecht University, the national SURF facilities or commercial providers.

Open Science

The Open Science Programme at Utrecht University aims to promote and facilitate open science practices among researchers, making research data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). The Utrecht Young Academy  also promotes open science within academia and society.

Research Data Management Support (RDM Support)

RDM Support is a multidisciplinary network of data experts at Utrecht University. It offers its researchers and research groups training, tools, infrastructure, guidance, and support in research data management. RDM Support serves as a central point of contact for expertise covering various areas, including IT solutions, information security, privacy, legal, and ethical issues.

CDH Research Software Lab

The Research Software Lab at the Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH) supports the development of digital methods and technologies for research and education in the Faculty of Humanities. The lab's scientific developers build tailor-made tools and provide advice on ICT-solutions for research and educational needs.

UMC Utrecht Bioinformatics Expertise Core (UBEC)

The UBEC provides bioinformatics support and services as an expertise centre within the Center for Molecular Medicine at UMC Utrecht. It provides expertise and guidance in data storage and sharing, and data management plans for grant applications. Currently, the services are available within UMC Utrecht and partner institutes on the Utrecht Science Park.

External Facilities and Support

CLARIAH

CLARIAH (Common Lab Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) is a distributed research infrastructure for the humanities and social sciences. It grants researchers access to large collections of digital data and user-friendly applications for data processing. CLARIAH serves as the national counterpart to CLARIN and DARIAH.

eScience Center

The eScience Center, established by NWO and SURF, is the national center for digital skills in academic research. It provides innovative software solutions, offers training in research software usage, and awards research projects based on calls for proposal. The center's expertise is provided by research software engineers.

SURF

SURF is a cooperative association of Dutch educational and research institutions. It collaboratively develops and acquires digital services, fosters knowledge sharing, and encourages continuous innovation. SURF is owned by its members, which include Utrecht University.
