National programmes

National organisations and consortia in the Netherlands operating in the field of data science and artificial intelligence play a crucial role in facilitating and supporting technological advancements, fostering innovation, and promoting societal integration. Below, you will find a (non-exhaustive) list of significant national initiatives.

AI Research Agenda for the Netherlands (AIREA-NL)

AIREA-NL, the first national research agenda for Artificial Intelligence, is an initiative by NWO in collaboration with the ministries and the NL AI Coalitions. It aims to bring focus and coherence to the Dutch AI research field.

Digital Society

Digital Society is a national collaboration that brings together computer and data scientists with colleagues from the social sciences and humanities.


ELSA Labs, introduced by the Netherlands AI Coalition, stands for Ethical, Legal, and Societal Aspects. Within these labs companies, knowledge institutions, governmental and social organisations jointly develop responsible AI applications. 

ICT Research Platform Nederland IPN

IPN serves as a unified platform for Dutch academic research groups focused on ICT science. It acts as a central point of contact for all matters related to ICT innovation and its impact on our society.

Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI)

ICAI is a national network that promotes technology and talent development in artificial intelligence, fostering collaboration between knowledge institutes, industry, and government.


I-Partnership Rijk - Onderwijs

I-Partnership is a collaboration between universities of applied sciences, universities and the national goverment in research and education in the IT field.

Kickstart AI

Kickstart AI is an national platform aimed at boosting the AI ecosystem in the Netherlands by accelerating and promoting the development of AI technology and connect the Dutch AI community.

Netherlands AI Coalition (NL AIC)

NL AIC is a public-private partnership that brings together governmental authorities, the business sector, educational and research institutions, and civil society organisations, to accelerate and connect AI activities in the Netherlands.


TTT-AI, Thematic Technology Transfer Artificial Intelligence, is a collaborative alliance between the Knowledge Transfer Offices of eight universities and medical centres, national research institute CWI and LUMO Labs, to transform research into new AI ventures.
