Obtaining a PhD position as an employee
Utrecht University offers two options for research trainees.
These options are:
- Positions on major research projects in which candidates work on defined sub-projects
- Positions whereby candidates are free to submit their own research proposals
As a research trainee (promovendus)
Research trainees are appointed for a maximum of 4 years in the case of a full-time appointment. They often spend part of their time teaching.
As a junior assistant professor
The university regularly has openings for junior assistant professors to work in positions with research components. It is possible to use research time to do a PhD. PhD openings can be found under vacancies. Please note that PhD applicants have to demonstrate mastery of English before being accepted into a PhD track.
