Academic integrity

Everyone involved in academic teaching and research at Utrecht University shares in the responsibility to maintain academic integrity.

Codes of Conduct

The Netherlands Code of Conduct for Academic Practice sets out the principles that should be observed by each individual concerned, which are honesty, scrupulousness, transparency, independence and responsibility. In addition, Utrecht University established the Utrecht University Code of Conduct for Scrupulous Academic Practice and Integrity. It describes the basic principles of the culture of scrupulousness and integrity the university strives for in her teaching and research and how this should be achieved and monitored. This includes ensuring that staff take a critical stance and feel able to address each other's shortcomings and engage in open debate.

Master's students

Academic integrity is also an issue for students, throughout their Master’s programme, for example, related to such issues as copyright and plagiarism. Utrecht University made a checklist with pointers for students about writing a paper, the use of references, conducting research, the use of data and working with other students. Being a student, you’ll find advice to help you on your way, and handy hints.
