Besides classical art historical and historiographical research, we develop creative and innovative research methods inspired by interdisciplinary, cross-border research and digital perspectives. Our research aims to distinguish itself by developing experimental, performative methods, historical reconstructions, laboratory research (in the ArtLab) and digital techniques alongside more traditional visual and textual art historical approaches.

We develop material-technical approaches to art historical objects and explore their relationship to contemporary debates, such as ecology and sustainability. The section is also pioneering advanced digital techniques for studying art, architecture and artistic practices, integrating the latest technologies, including digital capture methods, digital reconstruction, eye-tracking, virtual and augmented reality, immersive museology, computer vision, artificial intelligence.
