Life is short, art endures. But how did painters in the Dutch seventeenth century anticipate the future of their works? My dissertation charts  theoretical, material and technical aspects of artistic durability. Going beyond the surviving texts from the period and into the actual practices they document, I aim to combine compilation, practical reconstructions and analysis to arrive at a multifaceted understanding of how art was thought to endure.
