Applied data science/Artificial intelligence
Because of the widespread use of the Computers and the Internet of Things, more and more data are being produced. These data are often produced continuously, resulting in large data streams about all kinds of social phenomena.
The research theme Applied data science/Artificial intelligence is closely linked to the university focus area of Applied Data Science. In this area we study how all these new data can be used to improve our understanding of the social world, and improve policy-making.
We closely collaborate with the University of Utrecht Medical Centre in using new sources of data to improve health care, and with various branches of government to improve data-driven policy-making. For this we use a variety of types of data (text, social media, sensors) and work on new methods to conduct analyses on large volumes of data.
In practice, data are often incomplete; we develop solutions for incomplete data problems that yield correct statistical properties.
