It is a misconception to think that everyone is equal in the Netherlands. Therefore researchers of the Gender and Diversuty team Belle Derks, Linda Senden, Rosemarie Buikema and Ruth van Veelen plead in a manifesto (text in Dutch) for an equal treatment supervisor.

"In terms of gender equality, the Netherlands are doing worse internationally," the four researchers say. "Discrimination against ethnic minorities on the labor market remains a persistent problem as well. We therefore advocate the establishment of a Nederlandse Emancipatie Autoriteit (Dutch Emancipation Authority), abbreviated as NEMA."

Equal treatment

"Because of their lack of presence, minority political groups in our society cannot count on equal treatment and validity due to their class, color and religion."

Structural solution

A structural problem requires a structural solution

That is why the scientists believe that a structural problem requires a structural solution. "The government must strengthen the legal guarantee of equality and equal opportunities for everyone in our plural society. An Emancipation Authority should actively monitor the application and enforcement of equal opportunities."
