What is the present-day importance of the Middle Ages?

Many of the discussions we see in society today do not look any further back than a couple of generations at the most. This kind of short-term thinking leads to a limited viewpoint - a ‘provincialism of time’. Focusing on the culture of the Middle Ages in all its facets provides us with a different view on today’s problems: a long-term perspective, which invites a comparative approach.

Research and education in the field of medieval studies at Utrecht University is carried out at the Utrecht University Centre for Medieval Studies (UUCMS). The Utrecht-based medievalists share their knowledge of medieval culture with a wider audience in various ways.
