Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a transformative force with major economic and sociocultural impacts. Our research in the philosophy of AI is characteristically both technically and philosophically informed. The topics range from the epistemology of AI to the ethical and metaphysical challenges of AI.

Exemplary questions include: What are the possibilities and limits of (strong) AI, especially in light of the recent technological advances by large language models? What are the advantages and disadvantages of symbolic versus sub-symbolic AI techniques? How should we combine logical methods with machine learning to get the best of both worlds? Can explainable AI deliver on its promise to rectify various shortcomings of current black-box AI models such as algorithmic bias and unpredictability? Can AI techniques help us explain and understand phenomena and improve our (scientific) knowledge?
