History

Since 1824, the Auditorium has been in use by the university. Around 1460, the Auditorium was built as the Great Chapter House of the Dom. At first, that part of the University Hall consisted of the meeting room of the five Utrecht chapters. In addition, the Provincial Councils of Utrecht met there. Due to the Reformation, the chapter house lost its former function. In 1634, first the Illustre School settled there and then the Academy. 23 January 1579 was an important date, as the signing of the Union of Utrecht took place in the chapter house. The Union of Utrecht became the basis for the Republic of the United Netherlands.

History

Until 1970, the Senate Hall was a common room in which professors met, chaired by the Rector. The topics discussed were teaching and research, teaching facilities and student affairs. In 1924, the Senate Hall was commissioned. The walls of the hall were again papered with a portrait gallery of its own professors. The foundation for the collection was laid in 1685. Later, this series was continually added to, eventually, 185 portraits in the Senate Hall and over 500 in the University Hall and other university buildings.

History

The name of the room refers to the founding year of Utrecht University. Depicted on the mantel are Van der Hoolck and Van Velthuisen, mayors of the city of Utrecht in 1636. The hall depicts 100 female professors. On 10 February 1917, Johanna Westerdijk (1883-1961) delivered her inaugural lecture and became the first female professor in the Netherlands at the age of 34. Exactly 100 years later, 22 per cent of Utrecht University is female. The portrait gallery hanging on the wall honours today's female professors.

History

From 1836 to 1956, the masquerade was one of the highlights of Utrecht University's lustrum celebrations. A spectacle in which dressed-up people were accompanied by all kinds of exotic animals and horses. The theme that often occurred was an event from patriotic history. From 1896, an open-air play was also held. Masquerade refers to the former custom among students to hold costume parades at lustres.

History

Belle van Zuylen attended university lectures. She later became a European writer, known as Madame de Charrière. At the age of 20, she published her first novel, Le Noble. She did not limit herself to one genre. She often wrote plays, operas, novels and pamphlets. Her work from the French Revolution was particularly special. This work reflects her political and social commitment. She corresponded with many intellectuals of her time, such as James Boswell, David Hume and Benjamin Constant.

History

Johanna Westerdijk (1883-1961) was the first female professor in the Netherlands. On 10 February 1917, she was appointed extraordinary professor at Utrecht University. This was followed by her second appointment as extraordinary professor at the University of Amsterdam in 1930. Westerdijk was a professor of plant pathology (phytopathology). Since her appointment as professor in 1917, Westerdijk championed female students. On 10 February 2017, it was exactly 100 years since the first female professor, Johanna Westerdijk, delivered her inaugural lecture. This was celebrated by several organisations.

History

Cornelis W. Opzoomer (1821-1892) was a professor of Philosophy in Utrecht from 1846 to 1889. He was also an influential lawyer and translator. Opzoomer was one of the first advocates in the Netherlands of the empirical, positivist method of arriving at scientific truth. He was emphatically concerned with the core questions of science. He also translated several literary works into Dutch. He was the first professor to break with the age-old tradition of delivering his oration in Latin. He was the first to deliver it in Dutch.

History

Gerhard Willem Kernkamp was professor of 'General and Fatherland History after the Middle Ages' in Utrecht from 1903 to 1935. Before that, he was a professor at the Municipal University in Amsterdam and from 1913 at the Nederlandse Handelshoogeschool in Rotterdam. In 1890, Kernkamp obtained his doctorate as a historian in reaction to political historiography. In addition to teaching, he was editor-in-chief of the weekly paper De Groene Amsterdammer between 1920 and 1929 and editor of 'De Utrechtsche Universiteit, 1636-1936'.

History

Mr Joan Röell was a member of the Curatorium of the University of Utrecht for about 30 years. He was a typical university administrator between 1815 and 1940. Between 1877 and 1914, he was a member of the States General. From 1901 to 1909, he acted as president of the House of Representatives. He also held several other public positions.

The Faculty Club Lounge is an attractive meeting place for members of the Utrecht university community and their guests. At the heart of university life and in the heart of Utrecht. The Lounge has a pleasant, hospitable atmosphere where there is room for business and informal appointments. On weekdays, you can enjoy lunch and dinner here every day. On weekends, the Lounge is rented out to groups of up to 50 people for extensive lunches, parties and drinks.

History

The Canon Hall is named after the former occupants of the building at Achter de Dom 7. Around 1400, this house was commissioned by a canon, who was a clergyman attached to the Dom collegiate church and helped the bishop administer the diocese of Utrecht. Later, the building was used as a police headquarters.

History

The Star Chamber is located on the first floor of the Faculty Club's characteristic medieval tower. A cast-iron fireplace plate can still be seen in the room, which refers to the religious occupation of the building. The plate shows the birth of Jesus.

History

The Tower Room is on the second floor of the medieval tower and can only be reached by staircase. From 1813, this part of the building was used as a police headquarters. The Tower Room was used as a cell for the purpose of 'taking hostage' of suspects.
