During the Open Science on Track day on Wednesday afternoon, 13 December, Frank Miedema received Utrecht University’s silver medal from Rector Magnificus Henk Kummeling. Frank Miedema is an emeritus professor. Until 1 September 2023, he was the Vice Rector of Research at Utrecht University and Chair of the Open Science Programme.

Together with several other Dutch scientists, Frank Miedema took the initiative to organise a fundamentally different approach to scientific practice, focusing more on Society and less on the Scientist (metrics). He was one of the founding fathers of the “Science in Transition” movement, which helped get the significant cultural shift towards Open Science under way.

Henk Kummeling: As Chair of the Open Science Programme, Frank has worked tirelessly to promote this development at Utrecht University and externally. Utrecht University has earned an incredibly positive reputation in this field, both in Europe and beyond. We at UU are incredibly thankful to him for that!

Utrecht University awards the silver medal to people who have made an exceptional contribution to Utrecht University.
