Language use in Dutch novels not simpler since 1955

In recent newspaper and magazine articles, several columnists and reviewers have complained about the simplification of the style of Dutch novels. Have novels become simpler in recent decades?

According to researchers from Utrecht University, not. Nowadays newspapers do use simpler language. This is the first time that the development of language use in Dutch novels and newspapers has been studied over a longer period of time.
