A Turkish harem on the Acropolis? It’s most likely a Greek myth

When the Turks conquered the Acropolis in the 15th century, they had no interest in this sacred building whatsoever. They even used the temple as a harem, the residence of the Turkish castle warden’s wives. At least, that’s the story that’s been told for centuries. Classical archaeologist Janric van Rookhuijzen now shows this information might need to be revised. The ‘harem myth’ originates in the 17th century and there are no contemporary Turkish sources that mention a harem on the Acropolis. The Turks would rather have used the temple as a kind of palace.
