Algemene projectbeschrijving

ETHOS is a Horizon2020 project developed to create a new integrative perspective on justice and fairness. ETHOS does so by:

  • Combining conceptualizations of justice within various disciplines (philosophy, sociology, law, economy, political science) and various schools of thought (including liberal tradition, republican tradition and communitarian tradition);
  • Bridging a gap between the theoretical and the empirical reflections of justice and fairness, where 'empirical' encompasses data on the discursive construction of justice in Europe, institutionalization of justice in laws, subjective experiences of (in)justice in various social domains (media, education, politics and daily life experiences) and on (non-)institutional struggles for justice.
  • By accommodating multiple voices of vulnerable populations via communicative tools, workshops, focus group meetings, policy briefs, and the interactive European Landscapes of Justice. ETHOS will reach a deliberative process of attuning seemingly antagonistic voices in a harmonious concert, reflecting the mutual understanding of a European theory of justice and fairness.

In ETHOS six Research Institutions cooperate: Utrecht University (UU, Utrecht, The Netherlands, coordinator), Europäisches Trainings und Forschungszentrum für Menschenrechte und Demokratie (ETC, Graz, Austria), Kozep-Europai Egyetem (CEU, Budapest, Hungary), Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES, Coimbra, Portugal), Bogaziçi University (BU, Istanbul, Turkey) and the University of Bristol (UoB, Bristol, United Kingdom).

Project
Citizenship in the EU criminal justice area: Defining the legal position of citizens under mutual recognition instruments 15-01-2015 tot 15-05-2019
Algemene projectbeschrijving

The project addresses the relation between  citizenship and the principle of mutual recognition in criminal matters. It seeks to explore if and how  citizens are currently protected against arbitrary and discriminatory interferences of their rights and duties in the transnational Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. This project will analyze and map the state of the art of  citizenship under mutual recognition instruments and, from thereon, aims to deliver a contribution to the concept and scope of  citizenship in the area of criminal justice. In order to achieve this, it takes a comparative approach.

About bEUcitizen

The project set out to identify, investigate, discuss and ameliorate the barriers to the active use of EU citizenship rights (and knowledge of duties). The insights were developed by studying citizenship from different disciplines: law, political science, social sciences, history, philosophy, public administration and economics.

The research has been conducted by eminent researchers from 26 institutions situated in 19 countries in Europe and outside. It was coordinated by Utrecht University, with Frans van Waarden and Sybe de Vries as principal coordinators. See for more information the bEUcitizen website.
