Sybe de Vries (1970) has been since 1 April 2021 Full Professor of Public Economic Law. Before that he was Full Professor of EU Single Market Law and Fundamental rights and since 2012 the Jean Monnet Chair. He is visiting professor at the University of Trento (Italy) and he holds the Marcel Storm Chair at Ghent University (Belgium) during the academic year 2023-2024. His research and his education focus on EU Single market law, the twin green and digital transition of the EU Single Market, the social dimension of the EU internal market and the interconnection between EU free movement law, fundamental rights and public interests, including environmental, health, consumer and cultural interests.

He was the Academic Director of the Utrecht Centre of Global Challenges until September 2019, which is an international, interdisciplinary platform for research and education, centered around the theme of a contested global order and focusing on conflict & security, human rights, sustainability and development & equity: https://www.uu.nl/en/organisation/uglobe-the-utrecht-centre-for-global-challenges.
He was also the coordinator of the FP7 research project 'bEUcitizenship' on European citizenship, which was financed by the European Commission. The bEUcitizen consortium consisted of 26 universities and institutions from the EU and outside.
Sybe is a honourary judge at the District Court of Rotterdam. He is also the president of the Netherlands Association for European Law (NVER) and member of the editorial board of the Journal for European and Economic law (SEW).
