Drones in the Himalayas

The effects of the changing climate on the hydrology of the high mountain regions such as the Himalayas and Andes is poorly understood. We use models, field observations and remote sensing from satellites and from drones to study the hydrology of the mountains. The animation illustrates how we use drones to accurately map the Langtang glacier in Nepal and how we learn from these very detailed images how the glacier is melting and moving. That information is fed into hydrological models yielding information how the water balance in the mountains and the available water downstream may change in the coming decades.
