On Sunday, Oct. 6, 2024, the Centre for Science and Culture (CWC) will host Weekend van de Wetenschap (Science Weekend): a public event consisting of one UU program with several coordinated activities aimed at families with children. Are you a researcher and would you like to involve the public or tell them about your research?

In 2023, we welcomed over 2,500 visitors. In previous years, the extensive program also attracted many families with children. In 2024 we want to put Utrecht University's diverse research in the spotlight again. The event will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at the Utrecht Science Park, in the Minnaert Building and Koningsberger Building.

By offering the activities at one central location, we can attract more visitors and showcase the breadth of Utrecht research. Our target audience is families with children aged 8 to 12.

Important note: We have mostly Dutch-speaking visitors coming to Weekend van de Wetenschap. If you participate, it is helpful if you can speak some level of Dutch.

Interactive activities

The approach of the activities is to involve the public actively as much as possible and to let them experience science. During previous editions, for example, visitors could conduct their own experiments, reenact a court case, practice as an animal surgeon or attend a mini-lecture. For examples and inspiration, check out the Weekend van de Wetenschap website where our 2023 activities can be found or watch the video impression on YouTube.

Workshops

We like to send participants to Weekend of Science well prepared. Therefore, we offer all participants three workshops:

  • Wetenschnapps workshop on May 21 from 15:30 - 18:00 (including drinks afterwards). Professionals will think with you and help you design a fun, inspiring activity, or tweak your existing activity and make it even better. The location will be announced later.
  • A dialogue training in September led by an external trainer. During this workshop you will not only practice conversation and presentation techniques, but also the skills that are important for your activity or that you want to develop for it. The exact date and location will follow.
  • A customised training where you work with someone to think about the design of your activity. We will then plan together a date and location when it is convenient.
