Lustrum Reception, UCU20 exhibition and Documentary

Congratulations UCU!

To kick off our week of celebrations, a reception for UCU Students, Staff, Faculty, Alumni, and Retirees will take place. Join us at the Lustrum Reception in honour of University College Utrecht’s 20th Anniversary on Sunday 9 September 2018. During this event, we will raise a glass in honor of UCU, open the ‘UCU20’ exhibition organized by Mary Bouquet, as well as premier the UCU Documentary by UCU alumna Abigail Prade.

More about the ‘UCU20’ exhibition…

The ‘UCU20’ exhibition will focus on various aspects of globalization that have affected UCU over the past 20 years. From the mid-1990s’ educational and architectural project of transforming a military base into an educational campus, to successive crises of global capitalism, environmental degradation, and refugee students seeking a way back into education. Changes include higher fees, more courses, bigger classes, less time, greater mobility; the end of Dining Hall and an off-campus living option.

Want to contribute?

This interactive exhibition needs your input to visualize these changes. Where did you come from and what you remember about your first day at UCU? Where did you live and how did you go about making home – in your room/ unit/ on and off the campus? And what about Dining Hall? Or the rigors of studying at UCU? Which were your favorite places in Utrecht? (Cafés, sports clubs, bars, jobs…)

Send us your photographs, writings or other memorabilia - about your room, activities, committees, sports, arts, courses, and friends - that you would be willing to share with us for use in the interactive components of the exhibition! Please send these to: Mary Bouquet – M.R.Bouquet@uu.nl.

More about the UCU Documentary…

In this short documentary we’ll touch upon some of UCU’s early struggles in establishing itself as the first liberal arts and sciences college in the Netherlands. Professors talk about their personal experiences teaching at UCU and we follow a few alumni at their current jobs, reflecting on how UCU has shaped them.

Abigail Prade: “I hadn’t returned to UCU since graduation , but because I was making a documentary about UCU’s 20th anniversary it had now become a necessity to visit campus again. Walking from De Hoogstraat bus stop past the Rietveld-Schröder house through the gates, a flood of memories came back to me. I remembered the fun times, but also the times where I felt intense competition and alienated from “the bubble”. UCU in many ways outwardly seems to stay the same, yet there have been some small and big changes. The students still seem very similar to the ones I encountered back in my time at UCU though: they are intelligent, curious, internationally minded, eager, and maybe a little bit too ambitious and hard on themselves.”
