The hub Towards a Circular Economy and Society of Pathways to Sustainability has awarded three applications for seed funding to help develop the activities on the circular economy at the university. The funding will support a variety of activities that are all interdisciplinary in nature, foster new research areas at Utrecht University, and increase its visibility on the topic.

Integrating consumer behaviour in sustainability assessments

A research project on integrating consumer behaviour in sustainability assessments will combine insights from the social and environmental sciences to review this theme and develop new approaches for this important driver in the successful realisation of a circular economy, led by researchers from the Faculties of Social Sciences and Geosciences.

Degrowth symposium

Building on the success of last year’s first Utrecht Degrowth Symposium, a conference will be organised by researchers from the Science and Geosciences Faculties on the transition to a circular society within a resource constrained world built on economic and socially just development paths.

Adapting current policy instruments

The third project will explore the needs for adapting current policy instruments (i.e. extended producer responsibility) from a governance and legal perspective to come to a circular economy, through workshops and a joint paper, involving researchers from the Departments of Sustainable Development and Law.

New seed funding opportunities

These projects provide the start of the first activities supported by the hub. New opportunities for seed money funding and other kinds of support will be announced in the near future.
