Prof. dr. Jan van Tartwijk

2010 - Present, Professor of Education, Utrecht University

II have been a professor of educational sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Utrecht University since 2010. In the period 2017 - 2019 I was also a visiting professor at the University of Konstanz.

I have a number of managerial tasks. In 2014, I started as chair of Utrecht University's Graduate School of Teaching (GST). In the GST, five of the university's faculties collaborate in carrying out programmes for teacher education. Our partners are the school for secondary education in the wider Utrecht area and the Institute Archimedes of the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht.
Since January 2024, I have also been vice dean of the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. My responsibilities in this role include the Graduate School of the faculty, within which master's programs in the social and behavioural sciences are provided.

From 2018 to 2023, I also was the chair of the inter-university Commity for Teacher Education which is affiliated with the Association of Universities in the Netherlands

Until January 1, 2018, I was the scientific manager of the Educational Consultancy and Training group (O&T) of the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (I still am a meber of the board of O&T). Frans Prins succeeded me in this position.
Until this date, I also was the university's representative in the management team of the Academic Teacher Education Program for Primary Education (ALPO) which is a joint program of the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (HU) and Utrecht University (UU). Jeroen Janssen succeeded me in this role.

2004 – 2010, Associate Professor, Leiden University

I worked as a researcher, educational manager and teacher educator at the ICLON Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching. Both as a researcher and as a teacher educator, the development of teacher practical knowledge about their communication with students was an important topic for me. I was also responsable for quality assurance of the teacher education program.

2001 – 2004, Assistant Professor, Maastricht University

In Maastricht, I worked at the Department of Educational Development & Research of the Faculty of Medicine. My primary tasks related to acquisition and management of national and international projects for educational development. In my research I focused on the use of portfolios in medical education.

1994 – 2004, Educational consultant, Utrecht University

As an educational consultant I focussed on teacher professional development and assessment. I was also involved in research into teacher student communication processes and the use of portfolios for coaching and assessment.

1993 – 1994, Researcher, Curtin University

At Curtin University's Science & Mathematics Education Centre, I carried out a research project in which we investigated the interpersonal meaning of teacher behaviour in various classroom contexts.

1989 – 1993, PhD candidate, Utrecht University

I wrote a thesis about the interpersonal significance of teacher nonverbal behaviour. I also taught in the Teacher Education program.

1987 – 1988, Researcher/youth worker, City of Nijmegen

At the end of the nineteen-eighties, juvenile delinquency was high in the suburb Dukenburg of the city of Nijmegen. In this period, I combined the roles of youth worker and reseracher while working in the youth centre 'Boerderij Meijhorst' in this suburb. The aim of the research was to get more insight in how youth in this subsurb lived their lives, and bettter understand the reasons for the problematic behaviour of some of them.
