In addition to my teaching and research, I fulfil a number of internal and external roles related to my involvement in primary, secondary and higher education. Recently, I became involved in the Academic Teacher Education Programme for Primary Education (ALPO), which the university organises in collaboration with Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, and I am chair of the Utrecht University's Higher Education Research focus area. Previously, I was vice-dean for master's programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences, director of the interfaculty Graduate School of Teaching, which provides university teacher training programmes for secondary education, and scientific director of the faculty's Education Advice & Training group.

2004 – 2010, Associate Professor, Leiden University

I worked as a researcher, educational manager and teacher educator at the ICLON Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching. Both as a researcher and as a teacher educator, the development of teacher practical knowledge about their communication with students was an important topic for me. I was also responsable for quality assurance of the teacher education program.

2001 – 2004, Assistant Professor, Maastricht University

In Maastricht, I worked at the Department of Educational Development & Research of the Faculty of Medicine. My primary tasks related to acquisition and management of national and international projects for educational development. In my research I focused on the use of portfolios in medical education.

1994 – 2004, Educational consultant, Utrecht University

As an educational consultant I focussed on teacher professional development and assessment. I was also involved in research into teacher student communication processes and the use of portfolios for coaching and assessment.

1993 – 1994, Researcher, Curtin University

At Curtin University's Science & Mathematics Education Centre, I carried out a research project in which we investigated the interpersonal meaning of teacher behaviour in various classroom contexts.

1989 – 1993, PhD candidate, Utrecht University

I wrote a thesis about the interpersonal significance of teacher nonverbal behaviour. I also taught in the Teacher Education program.

1987 – 1988, Researcher/youth worker, City of Nijmegen

At the end of the nineteen-eighties, juvenile delinquency was high in the suburb Dukenburg of the city of Nijmegen. In this period, I combined the roles of youth worker and reseracher while working in the youth centre 'Boerderij Meijhorst' in this suburb. The aim of the research was to get more insight in how youth in this subsurb lived their lives, and bettter understand the reasons for the problematic behaviour of some of them.
