Margot Koster is Professor of Higher Education Research in Biology at the Faculty of Science and serves as Board Member for Education within the Department of Biology.  The chair focuses on improving academic biology education, with a particular interest in how students learn in laboratory settings, the role of writing in learning, and the development of sustainability competencies.

Her academic background is in Molecular Microbiology, where she studied bacterial secretion systems and bacterial biotechnology. Over the years, her interest gradually expanded from biological research to teaching and educational leadership. She served as Chair of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Science Undergraduate School (2014–2016) and as Programme Director of the Biology Bachelor's programme (2017–2020). She is currently Director of the Biology Education Institute and Board Member for Education in the Department of Biology.

Her research interests have shifted toward understanding teaching and learning in higher biology education, leading to the establishment of chair. Her main goal is to bridge the gap between educational research and practice and to promote evidence-informed education.
