Lonneke Boels teaches mathematics at the Christelijk Lyceum in Delft and is an external PhD candidate at Utrecht University. Her passion is to explain mathematics very well. In April 2016 she received a doctoral grant for teachers from the Netherlands Research Organisation (NWO) for her research: Developing statistical literacy through histograms. Autumn 2016 she started this research at the Utrecht University. Thanks to the scholarship that goes to the school, she can spend two days a week on her PhD research. Lonneke Boels researches how students can learn to draw correct conclusions from statistical graphs, in particular from histograms. Insight into the misinterpretations of pupils is used to improve statistical education in secondary schools.

Since 2011 Lonneke Boels has been writing regularly about her passion for didactics in the journal for mathematics teachers (Euclides). The first years she wrote about digital mathematics games, mathematics apps and mathematics websites. Since 2013 Little Didactics has been added in which she writes short pieces about practical didactic problems in mathematics lessons at vocational, pre-college and pre-university secondary school level. In addition, Lonneke Boels knows a lot about mathematics didactics for primary education, among other things because of her former work at the Haagse Hogeschool and Hogeschool Rotterdam.
