The central topic of Jolien's research concerns the developmental links between empathy, externalizing behavior, and parent-child relationship quality during adolescence. Jolien's research project is part of the ongoing longitudinal RADAR study, in which 497 adolescents are followed throughout adolescence. Using these data, Jolien studied the development of empathy from age 13 to age 18, and investigated the role of pubertal processes in this development. Furthermore, in cooperation with researchers of Utrecht University and VU University, Jolien invited all adolescents participating in RADAR for lab tests at the university. During these lab tests, cognitive and emotional empathic responses to dynamic facial expressions and to emotionally evocative film clips were assessed. In addition, motor empathy in response to the stimuli was assessed using facial electromyography (EMG). Further, heart rate was measured using electrocardiography (ECG) during the tasks to study basal autonomic functioning. The use of this multi-method approach provides a unique opportunity to examine the interrelations of cognitive, emotional and physiological aspects of empathy-related responding, and to investigate how the different dimensions of empathy are related to adolescents' social functioning.
