Geographical information is becoming more and more important in today’s societies. Not only for e.g. physical planning, navigation systems or location based services, but also for solving pressing global challenges such as climate change and deforestation. By providing insights and knowledge it is possible to contribute to those big social issues, because only through understanding we can ignite change. Are you prepared to make a real difference?

More than Geographic Information Systems

GIMA is a two-year joint degree Master of Science programme, available in part-time and full-time mode. The programme focuses on how to use, apply and manage geo-information from a scientific perspective, and offers more than advanced use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for a variety of applications. Think of addressing societal or environmental issues by using GIS technology, managing geo-information projects and spatial data infrastructures in organizations, or combining GIS with Artificial Intelligence methods and techniques.

Blended learning

The GIMA programme is built on blended learning. Meaning that most of the time you study at the place that works best for you. Whether this is at home or at one of the four participating universities. To kick off each module, we start with live sessions that you are expected to join in person. During these two weeks on-campus sessions we give lectures and explain upcoming assignments. The following 12 weeks are meant for distance learning, during which you can study through our electronic learning environment from wherever you are under the supervision of teaching staff. You can also choose to study and do the (group) assignments on-campus. At the end of each module there are again on-campus days at one of the four universities. In total during the first year you will join 4 two weeks on-campus periods divided by 4 twelve-weeks distance learning periods. When doing the programme’s internship you of course need to be present at the geo-information company or institute.

What you need

To enrol in this Master’s programme you need a Bachelor degree - or equivalent - in a discipline related to geo-information or spatial/informatics. Furthermore, English language proficiency and basic computer skills are required. Practical experience in the geo-information field will be considered as an advantage.

Why a GIMA joint degree?

Studying Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA) at 4 Universities has several advantages and benefits.

  • You are taught by geo-information experts from four universities in the Netherlands. Each with a strong reputation in their field and with its own traditions: University of Twente/ITC Enschede is known for its technical and application oriented courses for developing countries, where TU Delft focuses on legal, organizational and technical aspects of geo-information, Utrecht University on geography and planning, and Wageningen University on agricultural and rural applications.
  • The unique blended learning mode gives you lots of flexibility and freedom while following a state of the art GIS master program under the supervision of top GIS experts from 4 universities.
  • It's possible to study GIMA part-time, whilst working for a GIS organization. The part-time mode lasts 4 years.
  • Experts in the field of geo-information are scarce, so after completing the programme you will in all probability easily find a job. 84% of our alumni from the last 5 years started their careers as all-round managers, researchers and/or application specialists within less than 2 months after obtaining their GIMA degree.
  • You can join NODE, the programme’s student association that brings together fellow students with different fun or educational activities during the study period. Both during or outside of the on-campus contact weeks.
