Sounding the Past: Music as History and Memory

Boek Sounding the Past

Recently, the essay collection Sounding the Past: Music as History and Memory was published. This book offers the first systematic exploration of the past as manifested in music of the later Middle Ages and the early modern period. The collection is edited by Prof. Karl Kügle (Media and Culture Studies)

Sounding the Past

Sounding the Past takes the reader on a journey of discovery across the European continent, from the genesis of a new sense of a musical past in early thirteenth-century Paris to the complex and diverse roles and pedigrees given music of the past in sources, media, genres, communities, and regions in the Age of Reformations. The volume is available both in a printed edition and in open access.

Music and identity

Particular attention is given to the use of older styles and musical traditions in changing constructions of religious and political identity, laying the groundwork for a revised narrative of European music history that acknowledges the full plurality of styles and regions found in the sources. The volume concludes with reflections on the conflicting appropriations and effects of the musical past today in composition, performance, musicological discourse, and tourism.

SoundMe

This collection is one of the scholarly outputs of the multinational research project Sound Memories: The Musical Past in Late-Medieval and Early-Modern Europe (SoundMe).  Sound Memories brought together five international teams of music scholars and six music ensembles (Associate Partners) in six European countries during the years 2016-2019. It was one of eighteen transnational projects funded by the HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) consortium under the call Uses of the Past. Karl Kügle was Principal Investigator of the Utrecht team and Project Leader.
