UU staff plant flower bulbs on Princetonlaan

Starting in February, the flower boxes for the old combined heat and power plant on Princetonlaan will become a green oasis for early bees and other pollinators. This morning, a group of UU students planted about 65 m2 of organically grown flower bulbs there. The bulb mixture consists of, among other things, different types of daffodils, camassia and onions. Klaas Terwisscha, environmental maintenance advisor at UU: "Spring is starting earlier and earlier. That's why early bees look for their first food in February. By planting flower bulbs now, we provide extra food opportunities in early spring. And the mixture is chosen in such a way that it continues to bloom into the summer."

Sister Park

It wasn't just at the Utrecht Science Park that flower bulbs went into the soil this week. Flower bulb campaigns also took place at other locations in Utrecht. The actions are an initiative of the sister parks of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park (NPUH) to enthuse fellow citizens to plant bulbs in their gardens themselves. Since 2022, Utrecht University has been  a sister park of the NPUH. This means that we work together to create an attractive and green living environment in the city.

Natural Connections

The university is committed to biodiversity. Not only by making our own area more attractive to animals and plants, but also by strengthening the natural connections with surrounding nature reserves and estates.
