Students nominate 35 teachers for teaching awards

To stimulate teachers to continually invest in their teaching and to reward their education, Utrecht University has granted the annual Teaching Awards since the nineties. Teachers that are starting out can be nominated for the Teacher Talent Award, senior teachers for the Outstanding Teacher Award.

Student associations could nominate teachers until November 20th. Eighteen teachers were proposed for the Outstanding Teacher Award, seventeen for the Teacher Talent Award. Students write a motivated letter of recommendation about the teacher they put forward. Furthermore, the teacher writes an educational vision and delivers a resume. Two colleagues write a letter of recommendation about the nominee.

Last year, out of 33 nominations Gerda Andringa won the Outstanding Teacher Award and Lorena De Vita the Teacher Talent Award.

The proposals will be read by the jury over the coming weeks. They will select a number of teachers for both prizes for the second round. Out of these teachers, a winner for both categories will be chosen. The jury is chaired by prof Ronald Bleys. Besides him, the jury consists of teachers from all faculties and two students who have nominated last year’s winners.

At the end of January, the nominees will be announced. During the annual Onderwijsparade (Utrecht University’s annual Education Day) on the 5th of March 2021 the winners will be announced. The prizes will be awarded during the Dies celebration on Friday 26 March. Are you also excited about who the winners will be? Visit the Onderwijsparade or keep a close eye on intranet!
