Refugee researcher added to Vidi research sociologist

Scientists who had to flee their homeland due to war or another threatening situation often encounter obstacles in the countries where they find a safe home, such as language or work culture. This makes it more difficult for them to continue their academic careers. To this end, NWO has set up the grant 'Hestia – Impulse for Refugees in Science'. With Hestia, these academics can connect with ongoing Dutch research projects. Thanks to this form of grant, sociologist Amy Nivette can add researcher Dr. Idris Güçlü to her Vidi research on trust in police.

Idris Güçlü is known for his interdisciplinary knowledge, methodological expertise and practical experience in policing.

Nivette is happy that the researcher is coming to support her project. “I am happy to have Dr. Güçlü onboard because his interdisciplinary knowledge, methodological expertise and practical experience in policing will make a valuable contribution to the project.” With his contribution, the Utrecht sociologist hopes to gain more insight into who cooperates with the police and when. Nivette: "The project develops an integrative framework to understand the social, institutional and individual factors that make up the willingness to cooperate with the police. We will also evaluate, among other things, the reduction of crime."

Enrichment and opportunity

Dr. Idris Güçlü not only enriches the research with his expertise, he also gets the  opportunity to get to know the Dutch science system. With the grant, NWO hopes that the researcher will be able to continue the career and research line from his home country, and that the refugee academic will further develop and profile himself within the Dutch Science Landscape in this way.
