Barbara Oomen, Professor of Sociology of Human Rights at Utrecht University wrote a piece for Amnesty International on climate change and human rights. She focuses on the role of local governments in combating climate change.

With temperatures hotter than ever, and talk of water running out, a big question is how to combat climate change. In this process, subnational authorities play a key role. Municipalities declaring a climate crisis, regions seeking to reach climate targets as soon as possible, and provinces going much further than national governments in meeting the challenges.

In a recent article for an Amnesty International bundle on ‘Climate Change, Justice and Human Rights’ professor Barbara Oomen sets out what subnational authorities do, and why it’s important. A key issue, for instance, is how local action adds effectiveness, legitimacy and adaptability to addressing the biggest challenge of our times.
